Building The Exhibition
How we built the Human Race exhibition
Human Race and Northern Office for Research and Design (NORD) have enjoyed a collaborative and creative relationship throughout the whole process of building and designing our unique exhibition. We were convinced NORD were the designers for us from our first meeting. Their creativity and strong design ideas were obvious from their first presentation. Not only had they clearly understood the brief, they presented us with exciting and innovative ideas of how they would relate their work to the wider themes of our project.
The style and nature of the exhibition has presented both us, as curators, and NORD as designers, with some interesting challenges. One of the first challenges for NORD was how to design an exhibition that would draw people into it regardless of the venue. The Human Race exhibition quickly captures the attention of the visitor within busy spaces, such as sports centres, and maintains interest for visitors within more traditional exhibition spaces where the visitor can take time to explore and interact with the objects and art projects.
Another challenge faced by NORD was how to create an exhibition that would maintain the look, feel and style throughout the tour. Their answer to this challenge was to design an extremely flexible modular exhibition that can be transported across Scotland and could fit the diverse venues of the Human Race tour.
